Hi Lionel

The Black Mountains are in Wales (just) ....they are at the Eastern end of the Brecon Beacons National Park and go right to the border with England .

Anyway, some pictures:

are here.

For some reason, the slideshow feature isn't working properly on my machine, but you can still see them individually.

Stupid thing seems to work in Firefox but not in IE. Probably just my PC being stupid.

Good ones, T-Bird - I especially like the mist and low cloud effects in the later ones. But quite a hike! Hope you enjoyed/ are still enjoying the R&R&RR!

We had a day out birding last Saturday on the south coast at Portland, Dorset. The Isle of Portland is joined to the mainland near Weymouth by the shingle of Chesil Beach, and at the southernmost tip is Portland Bill, with its lighthouse. Portland is probably best know for its stone quarries - Portland Stone has been widely used in many well-known buildings: in London alone these include the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum, The Bank of England and the Cenotaph.

I have put some photos here:

It was a lovely day - sunny and quite mild, considering it's still January! Just to show it is by no means always such good weather when we go out, I've included, by way of contrast, a photograph I took at Portland Bill last March, on a day when the fog never bothered to lift on the coast, but when it was sunny just a few miles inland!

These are great, Puffin - I LOVE lighthouses!

The one in the mist looks like one of Sheila's Brocken Spectres!

(You could almost pretend you'd been hill-walking after all... cool.gif )

Cheers for sharing those Tbird and Puffin..they're great! Really like the look of Pulpit Rock....As you say hard to believe it's January! cool.gif

I'm off for a fifteen mile walk over the Long Mynd in Shropshire tomorrow. Only an elevation of 1,700 feet but its the wildest place nearest to the West Mids so have to make do.
Loopy Laura is going into hospital for a leg operation on Friday and I don't know when I'm going to get out again because she'll need some tlc for a couple of weeks. So I'll make the best of tomorrow smile.gif

The Long Mynd was lovely yesterday, and had the plateau almost to myself. Lovely views south to the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons, westwards to Cader Idris, and north across Shropshire and the Cheshire Plain. Took some photos but Laura will have to put them on for me as I'm u.s.

(Laura's operation went well, thanks).

Was out today over two Corbetts in the remote country of upper Glen Lyon.
An early start had me leaving Arbroath at 6am but I got the best of the day as the cloud lowered nearer lunchtime !
A wee bit more snow today than what we have in the southern Grampains but a still day with no wind.

Enjoy ! smile.gif
