Where abouts did you leave from scotgirl? I went with a friend to check out some of the paths a couple of weeks ago. We found the path up to Ben Cleugh and followed it up until we got out of the forest. It was a really lovely walk with the path running right alongside the river as it gushed down the hill (this was from Tillicoultry). Should be going back on Wednesday, weather permitting, to do the walk and really looking forward to it. At 2,363 feet this should be a fair bit easier than the disaster that was Ben Ledi in June! laugh.gif

We did a circuit and started off at the waterfall you mentioned, from Tillicoultry.

The first hill we did was The Law then we went onto Andrew Gannel Hill and down a path through the Maddie Moss, just down from that peak. That took us along the hillside and back to the car park.

I was surprised at just how vast the Ochil Hills spread out. I would like to do more of them one day.

Have you climbed any Munros yet, Crunchie?

Ah well

I don't mind climbing smaller hills but I love doing the Munros whenever I get the chance.

If you do decide to do one, don't get (Skye High) Andy to take you. I went up the Aonach Eagach in Glencoe with him this year and my nerves were just about shattered! laugh.gif

It was the only way I could think of to get you to indulge in a little bondage.

I think I'd prefer the smaller hills, when I did Ben Ledi earlier this year I found it rather hard going and it's only a 150 odd feet shy of being a munro. I'd rather do a walk that I enjoyed and wasn't having to stop every 5 minutes to er... admire the view. Maybe when I get fitter I'll have another go at some taller ones though I found the walk up the Ochils much easier than Ledi though I'm a stone lighter than I was back then - maybe that had something to do with it. huh.gif

I'm sure you can get to the top of a Munro. Take it at a really easy pace and do take lots of those 'admiring the view' stops to begin with and pick a fairly easy one. Getting out on other hills to get the cardio and leg strength built up is a great idea.

Are there any easy ones inthe central belt Jacqui? You'll probably know better than me, my problem is that my friend I go on walks with is much fitter than I am so I don't like to ask him to o easier hills for my benefit though he says he likes doing any kinds of walks.

I'm sure you could do Schiehallion (Aberfeldy/Pitlochry area). There is a good path for a fair way up (this is the steep bit) and lots of places for a wee rest. Once you hit the top of the path thats the start of the boulder field where its much less steep. Lets you catch your breath as you pick your way over the rocks to the top. Same route down. Boulders can be quite slippy if its raining but nothing to worry about.

Went up Ben Cleuch inthe Ochil Hills yesterday. Left the house at 2 o clock and walked to alva. Got to alva at 2:30 and started walking up through woodland park. Took a wrong turning and ended up going across the Wood Hill as opposed to up the side of it, but I just back tracked and got on the right path. Fairly gentle walk (althought it did get me out of puff heh heh) compared to the few other hills I've done, but it was a cracking day with a nice light breeze which made a big difference. Walked up the winding shepherd road until i got to the side of Alva Glen/Ben Ever and there were three tracks heading in different directions. I guessed that one path would take me to the top of the wood hill, another for Ben Cluech and another for...well I dunno! So I went for the least obvious one and turns out it was the right one. Nice agrassy track all the way up that hill ( i hate walking on gravel and shingle), so made decent time going up it. Got to the top of that hill adn could see the summit of Ben Cleuch to my right, so I followed the path (which was getting increasingly narrower and steeper drop on the side) for about 15 minutes then it was starting to get a bit darker, so thought it would be best to head back.

Was a race against the sun and I made it back to the shepeherds track while it was still fairly light. Followed it all the way down only to realise when I reached a farm house that I shouldve taken a path that swung off to the right.

Got back to there and it was twilight, so was a bit didfficult to see, but I managed fine usng the torch on my phone. Got to the pub (which I didnt even no existed!) at about 7pm and had a pint and a blether with the barman. Then started blethering to a couple of guys who bought me drinks, delaying me an hour! Was then another race against time as my taxi was picking me up at home to go to a house party at 8:40! So a mad dash back home for 2 miles, in the hsower, changed, out the door to the taxi. A very good day, you can find other photos from my walk HERE

Thanks for that Fiery! Lovely colours in those two photos. It says I have to sign in to see the others though.
