OOOOOOOOOOO, cute dog!

Had a little wander up to the half way lochan today heading for CMD arete to blow away the cobwebs but decided against carrying on due to likelihood of more than the cobwebs being blown away. Ran most of the way back down, I'm going to suffer for that tomorrow but will have buns of steel!!!!!
Forecast is apparently worse for later in the week ohmy.gif

Hi Deepblue,

I love to walk up to the Halfway Lochan and then to the Carn Mor Dearg arête. Please, post some pictures if you can take some next time you walk there.

Greetings from France,

Lionel

Lionel

Not much of a photoghrapher - too busy puffing and panting! Must think about getting myself a camera this year though, the one on my phone doesn't do such a good job and there are so many times I've wished I'd been able to get a shot of a view.

I was also right about regretting it today backs of my legs are OUCH OUCH OUCH! blink.gif

Hiya deepblue and welcome to the board. I have done the cmd route before but want to have a go at it via the gondulas on Anoach Mor or via the Ben after climbing the ledge route.

Good to see another hillwalker.

Good to see another hillwalker.

Have to admit I'm a real novice. More likely to find me up a hill on a bike or skis. Just laziness, why walk when there's a chairlift and gravity to make life easier huh.gif ? Only kidding!

Think I'd probably draw the line at attempting CMD arete on two wheels though - but never say never!

I actually prefer to be underwater but have done something odd to one eardrum and have had to be a landlubber for the last year or so. sad.gif So I'm lucky to be surrounded by so much good cycling and walking to keep me out of mischief

The Carn Mor Dearg Arete was just fantastic when I climbed it. The weather was glorious at the time, which is quite exceptional for that area! laugh.gif

Hope to be back in the hills come spring time.

Like most of the west coast and islands there is absolutely nothing to beat it if the weather is in your favour. If you want a gorgeous hill come to Lochber, then for the beach it's off to Morar or over to Luskentyre. We've got it all - apart from shops which sell anything other than thermals and crampons!

Deepblue,

Yes indeed, Lochaber is a great region for outdoor activities !!! And it's good that you can find shops selling crampons and thermals. wink.gif laugh.gif (because you need them badly when the weather is driech ! )

If you live in Fort William or Lochaber region, enjoy it because it's a great area. I am also very lucky over here in the Northern Alps of Savoy.

Greetings from France,

Lionel

Fort William is a hideously ugly town in a stunning setting, Highland Council planners should be hung, drawn & quartered quite frankly - what the heck is the plantation all about????
Going up to Glen Affric later today, now in my humble opinion that is truly beautiful and makes me feel all warm and fluffy!

Scientist's fear for Snowdon snow

Snowdon could lose all its snow in less than 15 years as climate change continues to take hold, it is claimed.
Wales' highest mountain has seen its snow covering fall by about a third in 10 years, Bangor University scientists and environmentalists have found.

Measurements show significant warming on Snowdon since the 1960s. Average spring temperatures are up about 2.5C.

An assembly government spokesperson said First Minister Rhodri Morgan is expected to make a statement shortly on the steps Wales will be taking in the fight against climate change over the next few months

Dr Clive Walmsley, climate change expert with the Countryside Council for Wales, one of the bodies taking part in Tuesday's joint meeting in Cardiff Bay.

He said: "We've been recording the snowline on the mountain for the last 14 years and over that time we've seen a distinct downward trend in the snow cover - not only in the height at which the snow is occurring but also in the season.

"For example, this year both September and October were free of snow so the season is getting shorter and the amount of snow cover on Snowdon is declining as well.

"We're linking that to the change in temperature, the rising temperature.

"We've noticed particularly in the spring period a 2 degree rise in temperature on Snowdon."

Countryside Council of Wales experts have created images using 3D computer modelling software of what Snowdon could look like without its snow.

They depict Snowdon under differing levels of snow cover, starting at the 100m snowline where you would typically expect to see snow cover in any given year.

As the climate warms, the images illustrate the snowline retreating up the mountain, finishing off with only a dusting on the peaks.

The changing climate of the mountain is like to an impact on the economy, added Dr Walmsley.

He said this would discourage walkers and mountaineers who want snow on Snowdon and eradicating species, which traditionally have their habitat in winter climes..

Dr Walmsley said: "The changes that we've monitored are actually quicker bearing in mind for the last two years the snow cover on Snowdon has actually been half what we'd expect in a bad year going back in time.

"So we are actually seeing more dramatic effects than might have been expected."

The Snowdon snowline is one of the assembly government's climate change indicators for Wales, along with the onset of the first daffodils in bloom.

An assembly government spokesperson said tackling climate change was down to everyone.

"A number of steps have already been taken by the Welsh Assembly Government to address carbon emissions which cause climate change, and our approach is outlined in the environment strategy published last year.

"Progress on energy efficiency, particularly in the public sector, has been encouraging.

"The assembly government obtains 90% of it supplies from renewable sources and we are looking to make this 100% by 2010."

These are great pictures, alun! The frost / snow makes the geology really stand out - it looks positively prehistoric.

Anniebach, thanks for the post on the snow of Snowdon. Really worrying, and similar phenomena in Scotland.

Apparently the North of Europe (and the UK) is particularly affected by global warming, as 'edge areas' in terms of climate and ecosystems. sad.gif

alun- 01-19-2007
yes Rig the geology is thousands of yrs old and is a result of glasiation
