Just come back from a fantastic few days in the Lake District...wasn't expecting such warm weather!!! Found a fantastic campsite in Great Langdale only 100 yds from the infamous Old Dungeon Ghyll pub biggrin.gif very peaceful except for the sound of the birds and sheep ...especially a very noisy cuckoo tongue.gif ..oh yes and the bloke in the tent next to us whose snoring was unbelievable!! Fantastic views of the hills and crags, can see we will be revisiting a few times, for walking and some excellent climbing crags there too blink.gif

We set out from the campsite to walk Scafell Pike..(too ambitious in the weather conditions as it happens) the beginning of the walk took us along the Cumbria Way for a short while then it was uphill to Angle Tarn where we stopped for dinner...not the best idea in the world as we got attacked by mozzies and midges but at least Strider managed to have a swim and we slapped on even more sunscreen biggrin.gif
Then it was off uphill again to Broad Crag where at last I had my first glimpse of Scafell Pike (was beginning to wonder if it existed at this stage rolleyes.gif ). We arrived at the bottom of the last haul but the heat and the effects of the rough terrain on Strider's paws were beginning to tell on him by this time and we had to make the decision to call it a day as it was a long walk back and neither of us fancied carrying him back!!! So it means that I will have to return another day to get to the top of England biggrin.gif On the way back we stopped at the Old Dungeon Ghyll for a very cold pint or two of Scrumpy which tasted fantastic laugh.gif

Thankfully Strider suffered no ill effects after the walk other than being exhausted bless him so a long walk the following day was out of question which means Helvellyn and Striding Edge will have to wait until another day also...pity as the weather the following day was fantastic as well. Next time we will go without Strider I think!!

Waow Annie !

Stunning pictures. It's a pity you couldn't do everything you had planned but you were really lucky with the weather. Thanks for sharing your pics and I hope next time you go, you manage to climb the "roof of England". wink.gif

Great Pics Annie, and what superb weather you had. smile.gif One thing though... are you sure that poor, tired doggie hadn't just been knocked out by the whiff from those sandals? unsure.gif After all, if they were that bad you had to leave them outside the tent... ohmy.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif

Hello again,

I am a bit late to post but here is a report about a ski-mountaineering tour that we (Patti and me) did last sunday, June 3rd. We left early at 6 a.m. and we enjoyed a sunny morning with snow ranging from hard-packed and frozen to crusty (not very good). However, the views over the Swiss Alps were really fantastic and we had an inversion of temperatures. We climbed up to the top of the Creux de la Neige corrie (2300 metres) and the steep descent on crusty snow was quite difficult. We both fell quite spectacularly but without any harm. The rest of the descent down to the altitude of 1900 metres was much easier and enjoyable. Great day for a first day of skiing in June.

My pics are here :

I really like your first pic of the valley filled with cloud, Lionel. smile.gif And I am also enjoying looking at all that snow as it has been almost unbearably hot and stuffy here today and is still very uncomfortable tonight: we have fans on to try to cool the rooms so we can sleep! It isn't usually this hot so early in June... sad.gif However, there is a severe weather warning in place for most of Wales tonight forecasting heavy rain, described as "Isolated torrential downpours " ohmy.gif Doesn't look as if it's going to come over the border into Gloucestershire though. Right now my feet would love to cool off in a bucket of your snow! laugh.gif

Hi Puffin,

I am surprised it's so hot in England and Wales. Well if my pics can help you to cool off otherwise I might have to send you a bucket of Savoy snow by DHL. laugh.gif laugh.gif
Have a nice day !

That's another report ! and that was Saturday evening (9th June 07) after my lessons. I was at 7 p.m. at Avoriaz, ready to walk up Arare wearing my skis to reach the first snow patches at the altitude of 1900 m. The weather was a bit stormy and I hesitated a little bit before starting but I decided to go anyway and I had no regrets after this fantastic tour. The threatening clouds left the sky to a fantastic sunset with a glorious light on the snow still covering the Hauts Forts slopes (2466 metres). The snow was packed but not too hard with a thin soft layer on top. So the skiing from altitude 2300 to altitude 1900 was really good. I enjoyed it ! At the top of my ascent of the Parabole corrie, I found that the cornice was still very high and the sunset was breathtaking !

No hillwalking this weekend ...went down the Gower (near Swansea) to do some climbing instead tongue.gif
Weather was fantastic despite a bit of rain on the way down. We did a V.diff climb on Little Tor..Great Tor was out of bounds as there was a peregrine falcon nesting there..saw him flying about a lot but didn't manage to get any decent photos sadly.
Not too many photos ...holding a rope and trying to take photos not a good idea biggrin.gif
Hoping to go down to Pembrokeshire in July to do some more...will try and get someone else to take the photos laugh.gif

Hi Annie,

Well done for you climb on that cliff ! That's very impressive. I would not be able to do such a climb. I prefer to have my feet on something more stable. wink.gif laugh.gif Though I like scrambling very much. But that is real rock climbing. Bravo Annie ! cool.gif

Hi Tiz,

It's great to see you back on the hills. It's a pity the weather wasn't very good... but at least you got some good views. When you mention "the lakes" is it the Lake District ?
I hope you have more hillwalking plans over the summer.

Greetings from the Alps,

Lionel
