Saturday 16th June 2007

After a very wet week, last week, the weather dried up on Saturday over here in the Alps and after my lessons, I went ski-mountaineering just under the top cliff of the Hauts Forts (2466 metres).

The snow was perfect for skiing and the weather sunny and a bit cloudy... but the wind was strong. I climbed a very steep slope up to the highest point under the cliff and then skied down to the altitude of 2000 metres. I couldn't skin up the upper part of the slope as it was too steep so I decided to carry my skis. That was the best way to get to the top easily.

The descent was fantastic as the snow was packed and slightly soft on top. The maximum hight difference between the top of the run and the bottom is still about 400 metres, which is good and long enough to enjoy a long ride.

Well this friday I will be up in the Yorkshire dales at Horton in Ribblesdale for our 3 peaks walk. The weather is not looking good and I know its going to be very boggy in places. If the weather is really bad we might have to change plans.

Hi all.
been up Snowdonia for the weekend.
had a litle walk up past Tryfan Bach and up a path that joins the miners track which leads up to Glyder Fach then came back down, but dopey me forgot to take my camera.
on the Saturday i made an attempt at my 1st scramble taking on Tryfans north face.I think I bit of more than I could chew for my 1st scramble as weather was very misty I couldnt see a thing.
I got roughly 830ish metres and couldnt find a way up a large rocky area, I ducked down through a gap between two rocks on east face skirted a bit and tried to go up a gully but it was to wet water was going up my sleeves lol,had another go at rock and sun came out for a bit and i looked down ohmy.gif ""gulp"" lol,so decided not to push my luck as mist was realy thick and head back down.
going down was a lot harder than going up lol and got a litle hairey in places but eventualy made it back to the car park by Llyn Ogwen.
Sadly tho however tho when I got back to the camp site the Air rescue started to search the east face of Tryfan for a couple who got lost in mist and the Ogwen Valley mt rescue went up to look for the couple, another team went up around 11pm ish and we could see their head torches up around near the Heather Terrace path.I later learned on my return that the husband had fallen and was killed.
I wil post a couple of pics when i can get photobucket to work for some reason i cant find all my mail and cant log into photbucket.

Alun ...you certainly did the right thing by coming back down .... sounds as though the man who died got disorientated in the mist and fell off the East Face.

alun- 06-20-2007
hi Annie.
yes i did the right thing in coming down, and yes i asume they got disorientated.

Hi Alun,

Thanks for your pics though it's very sad to hear about this terrible mountain accident. I hope that next time Alun, you enjoy a much better weather in Snowdonia. It's a wonderful place under the sunshine !!!

Next time you are there, if the weather is excellent, please don't forget to take your camera !

It's really good to see you were wise when climbing on Tryfan. On the hills, it's always important to remain humble and Tryfan is a really difficult moutain. Well done.

Greetings from the Alps,

Lionel

You'd be better off taking Lionel: he seems to be able to bring the good weather! laugh.gif

Absolutely right to give up - no point in taking unnecessary risks in the mountains Alun - if I saw mist like that I'd probably stay in bed! biggrin.gif
